CASP1은 시스테인-아스파르트산 단백질분해효소(caspase) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 카스파아제는 세포 사멸(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 이 효소는 인터루킨-1(interleukin-1) 전구체를 절단·활성화하는 능력으로 처음 동정되었는데, 인터루킨-1은 염증, 패혈성 쇼크, 상처 치유 등의 과정에 관여하는 사이토카인이다. 또한 CASP1은 세포 사멸을 유도하고 여러 발생 단계에서 기능할 수 있으며, 생쥐의 유사 유전자 연구는 헌팅턴병(Huntington disease) 발병 기전과의 연관성을 시사한다.
