CA2는 이산화탄소의 가역적 수화 반응을 촉매하는 탄산무수화효소(carbonic anhydrase)의 여러 동질효소(isozymes) 중 하나를 암호화한다. 이 효소의 결함은 골화석증(osteopetrosis) 및 신세뇨관 산증(renal tubular acidosis)과 연관되어 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoforms)을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 확인되었다.
