CA12는 이산화탄소의 가역적 수화를 촉매하는 아연 금속효소(zinc metalloenzyme) 계열인 탄산탈수효소(carbonic anhydrase, CA)에 속한다. 이 효소군은 호흡, 석회화, 산-염기 평형 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. CA12 유전자 산물은 I형 막(membrane) 단백질로 신장, 결장, 췌장 등 정상 조직에서 높게 발현되며 투명세포 신세포암(clear cell renal carcinoma)의 10%에서 과발현되는 것으로 확인되었고, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 보고되었다.
