CA1 유전자는 이산화탄소의 가역적 수화를 촉매하는 아연 금속효소(zinc metalloenzyme) 대가족인 탄산무수화효소(carbonic anhydrase, CA) 중 하나를 암호화하며, 이 효소군은 호흡·석회화·산-염기 균형·골 흡수와 방수·뇌척수액·타액·위산 형성 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여하고 조직 분포와 세포 내 국재(subcellular localization)에서 큰 다양성을 보인다. CA1은 8번 염색체에서 CA2 및 CA3 유전자와 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 적혈구에서 가장 높은 수준으로 발견되는 세포질 단백질을 암호화한다. 일부 집단에서는 대립유전자 변이(allelic variant)가 기술되었고, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)과 대체 프로모터 사용으로 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
