C7은 선천면역계의 말단 보체 경로에서 보체 성분 C5b, C6, C8, C9와 함께 막 공격 복합체(membrane attack complex)를 형성하는 혈청 당단백질(glycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 콜레스테롤 의존성 세포용해소/막 공격 복합체/퍼포린 유사(CDC/MACPF) 도메인을 지니며, 숙주 면역과 세균 병인에 관여하는 구멍을 형성하는 구조적으로 관련된 거대 분자군에 속한다. C5b-C6 하위복합체에 결합해 막 공격 복합체 형성을 개시하고 인지질 이중층에 삽입되어 막 고정체로 작용하며, 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 C7 결핍(C7 deficiency)이라는 희귀 질환과 연관된다.
