이 유전자는 보체 연쇄반응(complement cascade)의 구성 요소를 암호화합니다. 암호화된 단백질은 세포막(membrane)에 통합되어 세포 용해를 유발할 수 있는 막 공격 복합체(membrane attack complex)의 일부입니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 보체 성분-6 결핍증(complement component-6 deficiency)과 관련이 있습니다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 전사 변이체(transcript variants)가 기술되었습니다.
