이 유전자는 선천 면역 체계의 일부인 보체계(complement system)의 구성 요소를 암호화한다. 이 보체계는 염증(inflammation), 숙주 항상성, 병원체에 대한 숙주 방어에 중요한 역할을 한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 C5 알파 사슬, C5 베타 사슬, C5a 아나필라톡신, C5b를 포함한 여러 단백질 산물을 생성한다. C5 단백질은 이황화 결합으로 연결된 C5 알파 및 베타 사슬로 구성된다. 컨버타제 효소(convertase enzyme)에 의한 알파 사슬 절단은 강력한 경련 유발 및 주화성 활성을 가지는 C5a 아나필라톡신과 막 공격 복합체(membrane attack complex, MAC)의 소단위인 C5b 거대 분자 절단 산물을 형성한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 재발성 세균 감염을 특징으로 하는 보체 구성 요소 5 결핍증을 유발한다.
