이 유전자는 보체 인자 4(complement factor 4)의 기본적인 형태를 지정하며, C4A 유전자와 함께 고전적 활성화 경로(classical activation pathway)의 일부를 구성합니다. 이 단백질은 단일 사슬 전구체로 발현되며, 분비 전에 단백질 분해 효소에 의해 알파, 베타, 감마 사슬의 삼량체로 절단됩니다. 이 삼량체는 항원(antigen)-항체(antibody) 복합체와 다른 보체 구성 요소 간의 상호작용 표면을 제공합니다. 알파 사슬은 C4 아나필라톡신(anaphylatoxin)을 방출하도록 절단될 수 있는데, 이는 국소 염증(inflammation)의 매개체입니다.
