C1S는 세린 단백질 분해효소(serine protease)를 암호화하며, 이 효소는 인간 보체 하위성분 C1(complement subcomponent C1)의 주요 구성 요소이다. 암호화된 C1s는 다른 보체 성분인 C1r 및 C1q와 결합하여 혈청 보체계(serum complement system)의 첫 번째 성분을 형성한다. C1S의 결함은 선택적 C1s 결핍(selective C1s deficiency)의 원인이 된다.
