이 유전자는 페프티다아제 S1(peptidase S1) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 보체 시스템 C1 복합체(complement system C1 complex)의 단백질 분해 소단위체이다. 보체 시스템은 궁극적으로 식작용(phagocytosis), 염증(inflammation), 그리고 세균 세포벽(bacterial cell wall) 파열을 유발함으로써 선천 면역 반응의 매개체 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 엘러스-단로스 증후군(Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)과 관련이 있다.
