BUB3가 암호화하는 단백질은 스핀들 체크포인트(spindle checkpoint) 기능에 관여한다. 이 단백질은 4개의 WD 반복 도메인(WD repeat domain)을 포함하며 효모 BUB3 단백질과 서열 유사성을 갖는다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 지정하는 대안 전사 스플라이스 변이체(alternative transcriptional splice variant)들이 특성화되었다.
