BMPR1A는 골형성단백질(bone morphogenetic protein, BMP) 수용체 계열에 속하는 막관통 세린/트레오닌 키나아제(serine/threonine kinase)로, I형 수용체 BMPR1B 및 II형 수용체 BMPR2와 함께 이 수용체군을 이루며 액티빈 수용체(activin receptor)인 ACVR1, ACVR2와도 밀접하게 관련된다. 이들 수용체의 리간드(ligand)는 TGF-beta 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily) 구성원으로, TGF-beta와 액티빈은 약 5055 kD의 I형 수용체와 약 7080 kD의 II형 수용체가 형성하는 이종복합체를 통해 신호를 전달한다. 이때 I형 수용체인 BMPR1A는 리간드 결합을 위해 II형 수용체를 필요로 한다.
