BMPER 유전자는 골형성단백질(bone morphogenetic protein, BMP) 기능과 상호작용하여 억제하는 분비 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 유전자는 BMP2 및 BMP4 의존성 골아세포 분화와 BMP 의존성 연골세포 분화를 억제하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 치명적인 골격 장애인 골-척추이형성증(diaphanospondylodysostosis)과 관련이 있다.
