BMP15 유전자는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 분비형 리간드(secreted ligand)를 암호화하며, 이 리간드는 다양한 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합하여 SMAD 전사인자를 모집·활성화함으로써 유전자 발현을 조절한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질 가수분해 과정을 거쳐 이황화결합 동종이합체(disulfide-linked homodimer)의 소단위를 생성하거나, 관련 단백질인 성장분화인자 9(GDF9, growth differentiation factor 9)와 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성한다. 이 단백질은 과립막세포(granulosa cell)를 활성화하여 난모세포(oocyte) 성숙 및 난포(follicle) 발달에 중요한 역할을 하며, 해당 유전자의 결함은 난소이형성증(ovarian dysgenesis)의 원인이 되고 조기난소부전(premature ovarian failure)과도 연관된다.
