유전자 개요
BMI1 유전자는 폴리콤 그룹 복합체 1 (PRC1)의 주요 구성 성분인 링 핑거 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 복합체는 배아 발달과 체세포 줄기세포에서의 자기 재생에 관여하는 다수의 조절 유전자에 대한 필수적인 후성유전적 억제자로서 염색질 재형성(chromatin remodeling)을 통해 기능한다. 또한 이 단백질은 DNA 손상 복구에도 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 유전자는 종양 유전자(oncogene)이며, 비정상적인 발현은 여러 암 및 특정 화학 요법에 대한 내성과 관련이 있다.
