이 유전자는 작고 류신이 풍부한 단백싸개(small leucine-rich proteoglycan, SLRP) 계열 단백질의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 전구단백질은 성숙 단백질을 생성하기 위해 단백질 분해 과정을 거치며, 이 단백질은 여러 조직에서 뼈 성장, 근육 발달 및 재생, 콜라젠 섬유 조립에 관여한다. 또한 이 단백질은 염증 및 선천 면역을 조절할 수 있다. 이 유전자와 관련 유전자인 데코린(decorin)은 유전자 중복의 결과로 여겨진다.
