BCLAF1은 BCL2 단백질 패밀리(BCL2 family)의 여러 구성원과 상호작용하는 전사 억제인자(transcriptional repressor)를 암호화한다. 이 단백질의 과발현은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 유도하며, BCL2 단백질과 공발현 시 이를 억제할 수 있다. 이 단백질은 세포핵(nucleus) 전체에 점상 구조로 국소화되어 있으며, 세포자멸사가 진행 중인 세포에서는 핵막(nuclear envelope) 주변 영역으로 재분포한다. 이 유전자에는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoforms)를 암호화하는 다양한 전사 변이체(transcript variants)가 발견되었다.
