BAX가 암호화하는 단백질은 BCL2 단백질 계열에 속하며, BCL2와 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성해 세포자멸사(apoptosis) 활성화 인자로 기능한다. BAX와 BCL2의 결합 및 비율은 세포자멸사 자극 이후 세포의 생존 또는 사멸을 결정하고, 이 단백질은 미토콘드리아의 전압의존성 음이온 통로(VDAC) 개방을 증가시켜 막 전위 소실과 사이토크롬 c(cytochrome c) 방출을 유도하는 것으로 보고되었다. 발현은 종양억제인자 P53에 의해 조절되어 P53 매개 세포자멸사에 관여하며, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이가 보고되었다.
