유전자 개요
BAK1이 암호화하는 단백질은 BCL2 단백질 계열에 속하며, 이 계열 구성원은 올리고머(oligomer) 또는 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성해 다양한 세포 활동에 관여하는 항세포자멸사(anti-apoptotic) 또는 전세포자멸사(pro-apoptotic) 조절자로 작용한다. 미토콘드리아(mitochondria)에 위치하는 이 단백질은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 유도하며, 미토콘드리아 전압 의존성 음이온 채널(voltage-dependent anion channel)과 상호작용해 그 개방을 촉진함으로써 막 전위 손실과 시토크롬 c(cytochrome c) 방출을 일으킨다. 또한 세포 스트레스에 노출된 후에는 종양 억제인자 P53과도 상호작용한다.
