BAD는 프로그램된 세포 사멸을 조절하는 BCL-2 패밀리(BCL-2 family)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 BCL-xL(B-cell lymphoma-extra large) 및 BCL-2와 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성해 이들의 사멸 억제 활성을 역전시킴으로써 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 양성 조절한다. 세포자멸사 촉진 활성은 인산화(phosphorylation)를 통해 조절되며, 단백질 키나아제(kinase)인 AKT와 MAP kinase, 그리고 단백질 인산가수분해효소(phosphatase)인 칼시뉴린(calcineurin)이 이 조절에 관여하는 것으로 확인되었다.
