유전자 개요
BACE1 유전자는 아스파틸 단백질분해효소(peptidase A1 family)의 구성원을 암호화한다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 만들어지며, 이 중 하나는 성숙한 단백질분해효소(protease)를 생성하기 위해 단백질 분해적으로 처리되는 전구체 단백질(preproprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 막관통 단백질분해효소는 아밀로이드 전구체 단백질(amyloid precursor protein)로부터 아밀로이드 베타 펩타이드(amyloid beta peptide) 형성에 첫 단계를 촉매한다. 아밀로이드 베타 펩타이드들은 인간 알츠하이머병 환자의 뇌에 축적되는 아밀로이드 베타 플라크(amyloid beta plaques)의 주요 구성 요소이다.
