이 유전자는 새로운 퓨린 생합성 경로의 마지막 두 단계를 촉매하는 이작용성 단백질을 암호화한다. N-말단 영역은 포스포리보실아미노이미다졸카르복사마이드 포르밀전이효소(phosphoribosylaminoimidazolecarboxamide formyltransferase) 활성을 가지며, C-말단 영역은 IMP 고리화효소(IMP cyclohydrolase) 활성을 가진다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이(mutation)는 AICA-ribosiduria를 초래한다.
