유전자 개요

ATF4는 원래 HTLV-1의 LTR에 있는 tax-반응성 인핸서 요소에 결합할 수 있는 광범위하게 발현되는 포유류 DNA 결합 단백질로 동정된 전사인자를 암호화한다. 이 유전자에 의해 합성되는 단백질은 cAMP-반응 요소 결합 단백질 2(CREB-2)로 분리·정 특성화되기도 했다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 AP-1 전사인자 가족, cAMP-반응 요소 결합 단백질(CREB) 및 CREB-유사 단백질을 포함하는 DNA 결합 단백질 가족에 속하며, 이들 전사인자는 DNA 결합 도메인으로 작용하는 기본 아미노산 영역의 C-말단에 위치한 류신 지퍼(Leucine zipper) 영역을 공유한다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 두 가지 대안 전사체가 기술되었고, X 염색체 q28 영역의 큰 역위 복제에 해당하는 위치에 두 개의 위유전자(pseudogene)가 존재한다.
