유전자 개요

ATF2는 DNA 결합 단백질의 류신 지퍼(leucine zipper) 계열에 속하는 전사인자(transcription factor)를 암호화하며, 기전적으로 구별되는 기능을 함께 수행하는 능력에 근거해 문라이팅 단백질(moonlighting protein)로 확인된 단백질이다. 이 단백질은 cAMP 반응 요소(CRE)에 결합하여 동종이량체 또는 c-Jun과의 이종이량체를 형성하고 CRE 의존적 전사를 촉진하며, 시험관 내에서 히스톤 H2B와 H4를 특이적으로 아세틸화하는 히스톤 아세틸트랜스퍼라아제(HAT)로서 염색질(chromatin) 구성 요소에 직접 작용해 전사를 활성화할 수 있다. 또한 전사 조절에서의 역할과는 독립적으로 세포의 DNA 손상 반응에도 관여할 수 있다.
