이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 세레브로사이드 설페이트(cerebroside sulfate, 설파타이드)를 세레브로사이드(cerebroside)와 황산염(sulfate)으로 가수분해한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 이색성 백질이영양증(metachromatic leucodystrophy, MLD)을 유발하는데, 이는 진행성 탈수초화(demyelination) 질환으로 다양한 신경학적 증상과 궁극적으로 사망을 초래한다. 이 유전자에 대해 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)에 의한 전사체 변이체들이 보고되어 있다.
