이 유전자는 미토콘드리아에 위치하며 간 외 조직, 특히 신장에서 발현되는 제2형 아르기나아제(Arginase) 아이소폼(isoform)을 지정한다. 아르기나아제는 아르기닌의 가수분해를 촉매하여 오르니틴과 요소로 만든다. 제1형 및 제2형으로 구분되는 포유류 아르기나아제의 두 가지 이소형은 조직 분포, 세포 소기관 위치, 면역학적 교차 반응성 및 생리적 기능에서 차이가 난다. 이 제2형 이소형은 산화질소 및 폴리아민 대사에 관여하는 것으로 생각되지만, 생리적 역할은 잘 알려져 있지 않다.
