이 효소는 아르기닌(arginine)을 오르니틴(ornithine)과 요소(urea)로 가수분해한다. 이 유전자에 의해 암호화되는 제1형 아이소폼(isoform)은 세포질 효소로, 요소 회로의 구성 요소로서 주로 간에서 발현된다. 이 효소의 유전적 결핍은 고암모니아혈증을 특징으로 하는 상염색체 열성 질환인 아르기닌혈증을 유발한다.
