AQP1은 6개의 막 이중층 관통 도메인(bilayer-spanning domain)을 지닌 작은 내재성 막 단백질(integral membrane protein)을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 수분 통로(water channel)로 기능한다. 삼투 구배(osmotic gradient)를 따라 물의 수동수송을 매개하며, 안구액 이동의 불균형과 관련된 질환의 후보 유전자로 거론된다.
