APOC1은 아포지단백질 C1(apolipoprotein C1) 계열 단백질을 암호화하며, 주로 간에서 발현되고 단핵구(monocyte)가 대식세포(macrophage)로 분화할 때 활성화된다. 암호화된 단백질은 고밀도 지단백(HDL)과 초저밀도 지단백(VLDL) 대사에서 중심적인 역할을 하며, 혈장에서 콜레스테릴 에스터 전달 단백질(cholesteryl ester transfer protein)을 억제하는 것으로도 알려져 있다. 19번 염색체의 아포지단백질 유전자 클러스터 내에 위치하고, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)과 대체 프로모터 사용을 통해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성된다.
