이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 지질단백질(lipoprotein)의 일종으로, 관상동맥 질환의 주요 위험 인자인 혈장 트리글리세라이드 수치를 조절하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 단백질은 고밀도 지질단백질(high density lipoprotein)의 구성 성분이며, 간 손상에 반응하여 발현이 증가하는 쥐 단백질과 높은 유사성을 보인다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 고중성지방혈증 및 제5형 고지질단백혈증과 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 11번 염색체 q23 영역에 위치한 지질단백질 유전자 클러스터에 근접해 있으며, 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 확인되었다.
