APOA2 유전자는 고밀도 지질단백질(high-density lipoprotein) 입자에서 두 번째로 풍부한 단백질인 아포지질단백질(apolipoprotein, 아포) A-II를 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 혈장(plasma)에서 단위체(monomer), 동종이량체(homodimer), 또는 아포지질단백질 D(apolipoprotein D)와의 이종이량체(heterodimer) 형태로 존재한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 아포지질단백질 A-II 결핍증(apolipoprotein A-II deficiency)이나 고콜레스테롤혈증(hypercholesterolemia)을 초래할 수 있다.
