유전자 개요
이 유전자는 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 개시하는 세포질 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 WD-40 도메인, 카스파제 모집 도메인(CARD), 그리고 ATPase 도메인(NB-ARC)을 여러 개 포함한다. 사이토크롬 c와 dATP와 결합하면, 이 단백질은 올리고머형 세포고사체(apoptosome)를 형성한다. 세포고사체는 카스파제 9 전구체 단백질을 결합하고 절단하여 성숙되고 활성화된 형태를 방출한다. 활성화된 카스파제 9는 이후 세포를 세포자멸사로 유도하는 카스파제 연쇄 반응을 촉진한다. 대안적 스플라이싱은 다른 이소형질을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체를 생성한다.
