이 유전자는 복합체 2(AP2)의 이질 사량체 코트 조립 단백질 복합체의 소단위를 암호화하며, 이는 어댑터 복합체 중간 소단위 계열에 속한다. 지정된 단백질은 엔도솜 및 리소좀의 산성화에서 발생하는 양성자 펌핑을 담당하는 액포 ATPase(vacuolar ATPase)의 활성에 필요하다. 또한, 지정된 단백질은 CTLA-4 단백질의 세포 내 트래피킹 및 기능 조절에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사 변이체가 발견되었다.
