이 유전자는 아라키돈산으로부터 류코트리엔 합성에서 이중적인 역할을 수행하는 리폭시게나아제(lipoxygenase) 유전자 계열 구성원을 암호화한다. 골수 유래 세포에 특이적으로 발현되는 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 아라키돈산을 5(S)-하이드로퍼옥시-6-트랜스-8,11,14-시스-에이코사테트라엔산으로 전환시키고, 이어서 알릴 에폭사이드인 5(S)-트랜스-7,9-트랜스-11,14-시스-에이코사테트레노산(류코트리엔 A4)으로 전환시키는 반응을 촉매한다. 류코트리엔은 다수의 염증성 및 알레르기성 질환에서 중요한 매개체이다. 이 유전자의 프로모터(promoter) 영역에서의 돌연변이는 천식(asthma) 치료에 사용되는 항류코트리엔 약물에 대한 반응 저하를 유발하며, 죽상동맥경화증 및 여러 암과 연관될 수도 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체들이 이 유전자에 대해 발견되었다.
