AKT는 단백질 키나아제 B(protein kinase B) 알파·베타·감마로도 불리는 인간 AKT 세린-트레오닌 단백질 키나아제 계열의 세 구성원 중 하나를 암호화하며, 이 단백질들은 PI3K에 의해 인산화(phosphorylation)된다. 막 결합 리간드가 관여하는 다양한 신호전달 경로의 핵심 구성 요소로서 세포 증식, 생존, 대사, 혈관신생(angiogenesis)을 조절한다. 특히 PI3K/AKT 신호전달 경로는 종양 세포 생존에 중요한데, 활성화된 AKT1은 전사(transcription)와 무관하게 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 억제할 수 있으며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 여러 유형의 암과 연관된다.
