이 유전자는 세포 내 다양한 구획에서 에너지 대사 및 세포 아데닐산 뉴클레오타이드 비율의 항상성 유지에 관여하는 아데닐레이트 키나아제(adenylate kinase) 효소를 암호화한다. 해당 유전자는 골격근, 뇌, 적혈구에서 높게 발현된다. 이 유전자의 특정 돌연변이로 인해 기능적으로 불충분한 효소가 생성되면, 비구형 적혈구 용혈성 빈혈(nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia)을 유발하는 희귀 유전 질환과 관련이 있다.
