이 유전자에 의해 암호화되는 단백질은 평면 방향족 탄화수소에 대한 생물학적 반응 조절에 관여하는 리간드 활성화 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스 전사인자이다. 이 수용체는 사이토크롬 P450과 같은 외래물질 대사 효소의 발현을 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 리간드 결합 전에는 세포질에 격리되었다가, 리간드 결합 후에는 세포핵으로 이동하여 표적 유전자의 전사를 촉진한다.
