악티빈(activin)은 구조적으로 연관된 신호 단백질인 형질전환성장인자-베타(TGF-beta) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 이량체 성장·분화인자로, 적어도 두 종류의 제I형(I 및 IB)과 두 종류의 제II형(II 및 IIB) 수용체 세린 인산화효소(receptor serine kinase)로 구성된 이형 복합체를 통해 신호를 전달하며, 리간드 결합 후 제II형 수용체가 제I형 수용체를 인산화함으로써 안정적인 복합체가 형성된다. ACVR1 유전자는 악티빈 제II형 수용체와 협력하여 특정 전사 반응을 유도하는 악티빈 A 제I형 수용체(activin A type I receptor)를 암호화하며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 진행성 골화성 섬유이형성증(fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva)과 관련이 있다.
