이 유전자에 의해 암호화되는 단백질은 ATP-binding cassette (ABC) 수송체 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속합니다. ABC 단백질은 세포 외부 및 내부 막을 가로질러 다양한 분자를 수송합니다. 이 단백질은 지방산 및/또는 지방 아실-CoA의 퍼옥시솜(peroxisome) 수입에 관여하는 ALD 하위족에 속합니다. 알려진 모든 퍼옥시솜 ABC 수송체는 기능적인 호모이량체 또는 헤테로이량체 수송체를 형성하기 위해 파트너 반쪽 수송체 분자를 필요로 하는 반쪽 수송체입니다. 이 퍼옥시솜 막 단백질은 퍼옥시솜 생합성에 중요한 역할을 할 가능성이 높습니다. 돌연변이는 퍼옥시솜 조립 장애의 이질적인 집단인 일부 젤웨거 증후군(Zellweger syndrome) 형태와 관련이 있습니다.
