이 유전자는 ATP-binding cassette (ABC) 수송 단백질 계열의 막 관련 단백질을 암호화합니다. ABC 단백질은 세포 외부 및 내부 막을 가로질러 다양한 분자를 수송합니다. 이 단백질은 ABC1 서브패밀리(subfamily)에 속하며, 망막 특이적 ABC 수송체로서 N-retinylidene-PE를 기질로 사용합니다. 이 단백질은 망막 광수용체 세포에만 특이적으로 발현되며, 광수용체 세포 막을 통해 필수 분자인 all-trans-retinal aldehyde (atRAL)의 수송을 매개합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Stargardt 질환(소아 발병 황반변성) 진단을 받은 환자에게서 발견됩니다.
